“I’m the stink on your feet, I’m always with you”

I really feel that this metaphor has a very deep meaning to it. The comparing of ones constancy to something as persistent as a bad foot stink is beautiful. I feel that this metaphor is an onion with many layers. The deeper you go the sweeter it gets.

Podcasts

The thing about podcasts is that there are a ton of them out there. I enjoy some of the podcasts that my favorite musically artistic celebrities. But there are also many not so great podcasts to weed through in order to find swell casts. I would say that the podcast market is super saturated. which is true with about everything on the internet. But some of them are pretty rad, dude.

As far as teaching with them goes: I could totally see them being useful in certain situations. For instance if a class is missed a podcast could be a substitute for a lecture. Or students could be told to listen to a podcast to get assignments or to supplement information given in class. Podcasts would be a good way to keep things different and interesting in the classroom.

Social Networking

Social networking is more and more often being done digitally these days. From the networking that is done on cell phones, emails, and text messages to the web pages centered around social networking such as Myspace and Facebook, there are ample opportunities to do so. The many different avenues of digital social networking are beginning to merge on websites such as Twitter where you text updates to the web page and it then updates all of your friends.

All of these different ways to connect digitally seem to pose a threat to the traditional face to face, real life, physical interactions. But they also present many different ways to stay connected. I can stay in touch with friends in family that I would never call on the phone or have an opportunity to visit through Myspace and Facebook. Also, we can now receive news and information from many sources and as quickly as we can google (yes it’s a verb) a few words.

Critically Evaluating Web Pages

The internet creates a great opportunity for people to advertise and open information to many people. Unfortunately it can also present an opportunity for people to be misled or misinformed. Many websites look like legitimate businesses or sources of information at first glance. But contrary to their aesthetic principles these sites contain either fake business or inaccurate information.

As the use of the Word Wide Web has grown individuals have grown accustomed to the web page layouts. We now can quickly judge the legitimacy of a web page in the first glance. However, even misinforming or fake websites can look aesthetically valid as well, so one must evaluate the legitimacy of the actually content of the page. The content of a page, from a personal website to something as public as Wikipedia, must be verified for accuracy in order to be sure that the information on it is absolutely correct. It is very easy to be misled to believe things that seem on the edge of being true by a legitimate looking web page.

Web 2.0?

The internet has gone though quite a revolution in that last decade or so. Originally the World Wide Web was simply a mechanism for communicating information. Originally information was put on web pages, usually by a company or organization, where it was available for average user to access and gain the information from them.

In the Web 2.0 phenomenon this structure of the internet has dramatically changed. Now the internet serves almost as another dimension of reality. Now the average user who used to go on the Web to gain information has the opportunity to be the one putting the information on the internet. It has become a place where networking is done and people are using to buy, sell, and trade.

Things such as search engines, social networking cites, and blogs have made the internet an easily accessible and highly personal thing. The focus has migrated from a closed system of obtaining information to an open and interactive system for people to enrich and publish their own lives.

The new internet scares me. I find when I return to my house one of the first things I check is my Facebook, E-mail, and Myspace accounts. I find that some people have become more concerned with their cyber lives on Web 2.0 than their lives in reality around them.

The future of the World Wide Web is bitter-sweet. It could either continue to be used as a technological tool to help technology and information spread, or it could become something that dominates the lives of it’s users. With great ability comes great responsibility, and it’s the internet, man.
